A complete re-roof, from strip-out to ridge

This house needed more than a patch repair, so the old roof covering came off and we rebuilt it properly from the rafters up. A full re-roof is the right answer when tiles are slipping across the whole roof, the old felt has perished, or leaks keep coming back in different places.

Here is what the job involved, in the order we did it:

Stripped the old tiles, battens and felt back to the rafters
Laid a new breathable membrane to keep water out and let the loft breathe
Fixed new treated battens at the correct gauge for the tiles
Laid the new tiles, cut neatly in at the edges and valleys
Finished the ridge and checked flashings and roofline before the scaffold came down

How a re-roof comes together

From skeleton to finished roof

These four photos are from our own re-roofing work. They show the stages every new roof goes through, and why each layer matters.

Step 1

Strip back to the timbers

The old covering is removed so we can see the rafters and check for rot or damage before anything new goes on.

Step 2

Breathable membrane

A new breathable membrane goes over the rafters. It is the roof’s second line of defence against driven rain and helps stop condensation in the loft.

Step 3

New treated battens

Treated battens are fixed over the membrane at the right spacing for the chosen tiles or slates, giving a straight, solid base.

Step 4

Tiles and ridge finished

The tiles go on, the ridge is fixed and the roof is checked from top to bottom. The result is a sound, weathertight roof.

Pitched & tiled roofs

Pitched and tiled roofs

Most homes in Hounslow and West London have a pitched roof covered in concrete or clay tiles. These photos show hip roofs, gable roofs, terracotta and grey tiles, roof windows and new bargeboards on houses we have worked on.

Common signs a tiled roof needs attention are slipped or cracked tiles, a loose ridge, damp patches on bedroom ceilings and daylight showing in the loft.

Slate roofs

Slate is thin, dense natural stone that lasts a long time when it is laid and fixed properly. Many older terraces and semis across West London still have slate roofs, and they need a roofer who knows how to cut, hole and fix each slate.

We repair slipped and broken slates and lay new slate roofs, including the ridge line.

Flat roofs

Flat roofs are common on extensions, garages, dormers and back additions. When an old flat roof starts to pond water, blister or leak at the edges, it is often time to replace the covering rather than keep patching it.

Roofline, guttering and chimneys

A roof is only as good as its edges. Fascias, soffits and guttering carry water away from the walls, and chimney flashing seals the joint where the stack meets the roof, which is one of the most common places for a leak to start.

The work was done to a high standard and a good price. They worked very hard, were punctual, polite, helpful and communicated well.
